I will open your Graves and have you rise from them and I will bring you back to your land then you shall know that I am the Lord O My People I will put my spirit in you that you may live you shall know them that I am the Lord I have promised it and I will do it says the Lord let us pray beloved savior you return to the father all that he had given you so he might restore all to you a hundredfold in the Glorious Resurrection help us we beg you to give generously of ourselves and all that we do for you so that like you we might be made perfect in a new Resurrection the fourteenth station Jesus is laid in the Tomb Midori o Christ and we praise you Joseph of Arimathea took the body of Jesus and wrapping it in a clean linen cloth he laid it in his new tomb which is hewn out of rock then he rolled a large Stone against the entrance and departed I will praise you oh lord for you drew me clear and did not let my enemies Rejoice over me oh Lord my God I cried out to you and you healed me oh Lord you brought me up from the lower world you preserved me from among those going down into the pit sing praise to the Lord you his faithful ones and give thanks to His holy name for his anger lasts but a moment his Goodwill is for a lifetime at nightfall weeping enters in but with Dawn, rejoicing let us pray Almighty and eternal God on the edge of sadness when all seems lost you restored to us the Savior we thought defeated and conquered help us we beg you so do empty ourselves of self concern that we might see your hand in every failure and your victory in every defeat these things we ask in the name of your son Jesus Christ who lives and reigns forever with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit we adore your Christ and we praise you when the Sabbath was past Mary Magdalene the mother of James and Salome bought spices that they might go and anoint Jesus very early on the first day of the week when the sun had just risen they came to the tomb they were saying to one another who will roll the stone back find the entrance to the tomb for us it was very large but looking up they saw that the stone had been rolled back and upon entering the tomb they were amazed to see a young man sitting at the right side and clothed in a white robe he said to them do not be terrified you are looking for Jesus of Nazareth who was crucified he is risen he is not here behold the place where they laid him I believe in the Father Almighty creator of Heaven and Earth and in Jesus Christ his only son our Lord who was conceived by the Holy Spirit born of the Virgin Mary suffered under Pontius Pilate was crucified I died and was very send it into the third day he rose again from the dead he ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty from there he shall come to judge the living and I believe in the Holy Spirit the Holy Catholic Church the communion of saints the Forgiveness of sins the resurrection of the body and life Everlasting welcome ever Welcome to our Lenten speaker series for tonight St Patrick's Day what a great weight day to talk about Saint Patrick some people ask me about our speaker last week so I did want to give you the heads-up on her speaker last week she didn't show up and so was that worried about her but as I followed up with her she had it down on a different day and so I did not do a good job of explaining your which day was that she was all prepared to come on when Play 2 days ago that would not work so I invited her for a future event sometime but I was so impressed with Father Steve as for the moment giving us a joke and a 10-minute talk pretty awesome so I'm very thrilled today is our speaker is here today that makes me feel very very much much better I'm thrilled to invite Becky Hensler up and she's one of our members so far St George family of parishes she attends GA she used to work at the Archdiocese and now she's just taking a new job as an admin for net Ministries so we're really why did they have Becky come up and talk on Saint Patrick oh you may not want to do that because you haven't heard anything yet it's interesting when I'm done and I first started talking about this and talking about what I do willing to come and speak I was like for sure I'm a talker and that means I'm always happy to come and speak and then we started having conversations about what was she looking for a talk on and she's always going to be asleep by really love their so so you're all set to speak on the 17th and your topic will be sick Patrick I'm not Irish my knowledge of Saint Patrick is predominantly from the VeggieTales story not sure how much of that is actually accurate and I'm like okay but I probably should know some things about St Patrick's I want to start with a couple of questions for you guys raise your hand if you have been Faithfully celebrating St Patrick's Day for more than 2 years okay raise your hand if you're Irish in some way shape or form okay my kids can do that I can't see my kids cuz it had complain Irish heritage I don't get that privilege raise your hand if you celebrate St Patrick's Day more than st-patrick fair right there isn't business this is a multi-faceted thing right there are things that we associate with the guy and then there are things that we associate with the events beer being the major difference between the two cuz there's really no indication that Saint Patrick David earn about beer but it clearly is is a part of the celebration so then we get to the discussion of why do we celebrate Saint Patrick why is he so important what matters so again I want to turn it to you guys a little bit what are the things that you know and I'm going to caution you or think you know about St Patrick is anybody brave enough to give me one thing that they know. great question we're going to talk about Irish snakes on an island think about that one for a minute yes ma'am he's British he's not Irish okay that's the first thing but that actually becomes really important and really makes him why we celebrating here that's one of the key things shifter he drove out snakes and rats okay the boys will come back to that what else yes ma'am she came to Ireland first as a slave what do you guys think of when you think about the celebration of Saint Patrick's give me a couple of things that you think immediately when you think of Saint Patrick's Day celebrations second shamrocks parade anybody from Chicago what do they do they dye the river green okay that sounds really Irish right green is clearly a part of this. Yes ma'am Irish music and dance step dancing in really really great music okay so these are some things that we've heard about or that we we know to be part of Saint Patrick so the question is a how much of it is true and B how much of it matters which I think is real the key question that I want to ask tonight so what I want to talk about is what do you know about it which we started with what is Saint Patrick's Day have to do with Saint Patrick and then what can we actually learn from St Patrick's was the three things I want to hit on let's with what we actually know about Saint Patrick the man we know that he lived in roughly the 5th Century we don't have actual dates for him we're guessing the reason is feast day is on the 17th is cuz we think it's the he died we're honestly not sure okay ray is your hand if you know somebody else whose feast day is today this one's hard did you know that the following people all have feast day today St Ambrose of Alexandria Saint Gertrude of nivelle's St John's zarkandar St Joseph of Arimathea State Paula Cypress and bless her blessed Peter I can't pronounce his last name so these people have their feast day on the 17th of March to Patrick's only when we celebrate Gertrude of nivelle's I think is a saint we should be celebrating she's the patron saint of cats and cat lady I'm not joking someone who is a patron of people who feel lonely and look the felions to comfort them back to me sounds like a worthy proposition but why does St Patrick's on some okay you think about what was happening in Ireland back in the fifth century were talking about a very wild country you're talkin about lack of civilization right we're talking about tribal life there were Chieftains and in order to go anywhere you basically had to have the permission of the local Chieftain how do you think you get the permission of local Chieftain you pay for it so in this case you had to accept a bribe in order to become a patron of the chieftain and that's be allowed to talk to his people anybody want to guess whether Saint Patrick took bribes or not this is a huge bone of contention so this is one of the discussion Point nobody's a hundred percent sure how many of you ever heard of Saint Patrick's autobiography confessions okay so the man wrote a big treat essentially it was because he was standing trial for having accepted bribes to bring people into the faith and to receive protection from the chieftain the truth of the matter is nobody sure whether he did accept bribes or not but we know that there were several Chieftains from she did not accept bribes and he therefore did not carry their protection and those people in fact are the reason that the famous Saint Patrick's breastplate breast plate prayer exist because those Athens was trying to prevent him from going to Tara to actually proselytized and because he did not have the protection of the chieftain he sent out his forces to Stockton OK Google there were lots of cases where we can know for certain that he turn down the bra and said I'm not going to do that that's not the right way to do this but there were many people who claim that he did take the bribes and did get the get the actual protection that way he taught as you converted to peso do all of it went hand-in-hand I'm here to teach you things I want you to know new things I want you to understand new information but it's toward an end it's toward the goal of conversion and I think in modern is that to me is actually a huge gap right there lots of times that we go let me just ask about your childhood growing up in the church how many of you had what I call sit down and shut up catechesis right where you went into a classroom and you sat down and someone talked I'm going to tell you things and you need to memorize these who's the people who are our ages and older we didn't have really engaging catechesis we didn't have that time when we could really ask questions or talk about things or understand that matter to it that's exactly what Saint Patrick was all about Saint Patrick was all about if you know a fact that's not the same as actually wanting to act on that knowledge of God and he didn't want to teach do anything that didn't build your relationship with God and didn't exactly do the conversion which sure sounds like a much cooler way to to get through what I remember is slightly painful plastic rights you want the kids to be engaged want people to want to hear more part of that comes without the Patrick himself actually can not converted he had his Awakening at a young age okay so let's go to one of the things that someone said she actually was British because was in fact enslaved by Pirates when he was very young and was brought to Ireland to serve as a slave predominantly among the pigs he slapped the pigs that was his job all day every day was to care for the it's how he got the name that he went by as a as a slave boy was Maiwand it which basically meant Keeper of the pigs it was it was not a real name it was just he had a title so now your kid even taken away from your family and you even have an identity anymore you're only identity is what you do for your master to me that's really hard if Adam because I've never grown up or never had a moment in my life where I didn't know that I was a child of God being a child of God Is So intrinsic to who I am and how I fun what I do and how I love and interact with other people I can't imagine living a life where my only identity was the task I would be stapler chair I sit in the chair can I staple that's my identity and that would be really weird to me as opposed to being Becky who's a child of God Who Loved just for being and I think that's one of the things that to me makes Patrick compelling was it even as a slave that's when Patrick began to start praying so heavily wasn't Patrick was a really devout kid or really do is catechism well or any of those things he was just a kid stolen away and when he got stolen away he started praying constantly he constantly turned to God and said okay talk to me here what do I need to do what how am I going to get through this what I need some guidance not responding. It was blessed with several Visions in the course of his life one of them the first predominant one was in fact while he was a slave he was a slave for about 6 years and one night he had a dream we're actually heard a voice telling him that he was soon going to go home that his ship was ready and he needed to get to the ship and so she ran away from the farm where he was but he ran away not sure where he was running too because he's always been the slave it was about 200 miles away where the port was located and that's where he went he just ran into the port and when he got there there was a captain ship ready to depart and he persuaded the captain to let him on board he said I don't belong here I need to go home and the captain agreed and took him on board when they landed in Britain everyone left the ship and they started and it was 28 days before they found any town in the civilization anything else they basically landed and it was all Wilderness and he's like I can't believe I escaped slavery to Landon place with nothing now I'm still separated for onion how is this better right we're starting to hear reminiscent of Joseph and his gosh I'm not really sure what you're doing your God that seems to be getting worse as I go but what happened was on board the ship said we'll you're a man of God you can talk to us about how often you pray this whole journey do something talk to the man if he is real and this is something we should be involved in do something about it Sweden and he prayed and he said I don't know what to do next for lost and there's no food everybody's getting more than a little cranky and they don't want me talking about you anymore and lo and behold went around the corner and there was a herd of wild boar and they killed them and ate and survived and then we're able to walk the rest of the way to find civilization and when you think of it from that angle you think about a young man who still had that strength after all those years to say no I know this is what's gotten me through this is what's made the slavery doable is this this prayer that I have this guy that's supporting me so at that point everyone who'd been on board ship with him held Patrick and high esteem they believe that this guy really know what he was talking about so what do you think Patrick did next not for a long time actually it sounds like when you reach this point the store you're like well obviously he was like clearly this is my calling I need to go do something with it no like most of us he ignore the calling completely fast over his head he just went home he went back to his home and just survived and lived for a while he continued to pray but she didn't really think about a vocation or what he wanted to do with this he was just happy to be done done with a certain phase of his life that he thought was horrible he hadn't even been thinking about it as something was going to give him something in the future until we had another vision and this time the vision axe we had more to do with the people of Ireland are calling to you and they're saying you need to come back and you need to tell us some of these things that you've learned but that meant that he needed to go learn a lot right so he finally decided he wasn't actually to go become a and it became a missionary he decided specifically and you guys all know that when you become a priest there many choices right you can choose to be a Diocesan priest and that means you're coming to a place and you will serve everyone in that place you may move around but you're in a region you can become a priest of an order which means you can you can have certain charisms that you're pursuing but you're not necessarily tied to like Cincinnati or Ohio or something like that he just chose to be a missionary priest from beginning he felt like he was too what's the travel that was part of the package so that's what he did but this is where I think in my mind some of the story gets really intriguing if you go back when you start researching all the things that people think happened with Patrick or even the things that Patrick himself said happened in his life you start getting it almost looks like there's two timelines of men running kind of alongside each other and kind of christen Crossing like a DNA strand as you start watching the history and it starts getting very confusing and what am I seeing this doesn't make sense Until you realize to Patrick's is another man who went to Ireland around the same time that Patrick went to Ireland and his who's actually palladius but he often went by the name Patrick or at least the Gaelic version of the name Patrick when he was in the country and so you can't always tell which man you're hearing stories about you're seeing these things intertwine now Anthropologie wise there is no evidence that there were ever snakes in Ireland prior to Patrick it's an island nation where would they have come from is the general they really weren't there if it's not bad that Patrick is believed to have run out the snakes just doesn't necessarily make a difference in this case because whether there are snakes there aren't snakes in Ireland whether there were before him or not is basically irrelevant because let's be honest what exactly do running the snakes out have to do with believing in God but that's not necessarily a prerequisite right it's not like we have to believe that he drove out the snakes or else we can't believe he said about God cuz that doesn't make sense what we do know is that this Patrick wrote down a lot in his confession because he wanted people to understand he was trying to explain what things that happened in he would go to a tribe and talk to them he was accused quite often of courting the ladies okay now you guys have been to church events for years right who are the most talkative people at the fish fry the ladies I mean this is just the reality of how we are as a society the women get together and talk so if you want to reach people you talk to the people that are capable of carrying your message fastest and it's going to be the gout and so for him that's what he did it wasn't about courting favor with a particular woman he was constantly talking about I need you to know this amazing guy think of it like being a giant yenta for God hope they're trying to promote God you need to know Jesus this is this amazing guy and he's going to change your life and that's what he was really trying to do for these women was to convince them that there was something more and better than what they were struggling with right then which play with a lot of Celtic lot of Druid a lot of things that were Pagan there's a great tree and we think this tree is amazing there for the tree is what we worship and we believe that our our benefits come from the that's not true Jimmy so he would convince them that there was somebody better they needed to meet and understand and then they would talk to their spouses and that was how he got into the chieftain tribe able to talk to the chieftain convinced him there was more to his story and then he would be given access to the entire tribe to share the word of God so six years of slavery goes and trains to be a missionary then returns to help and serve what trait does that describe whole bunch of them right for me perseverance the number one thing I think we learned from Saint Patrick is perseverance 6 Years a Slave and I'm still going to choose to go back and I'm still going to choose to continue to pursue something seems pretty hopeless at the time and I think for all of us today one of the major mess if we can take from Saint Patrick is how valuable perseverance can be and and how even if we don't see the fruit of it it will feed us the act of persevering has a lot to do with how they are built up from the perseverance itself not just about what I want to do it's that when I'm persevering and something that I'm unhappy with her don't want to do that I actually feel supported because I know I'm still moving forward and I can feel the positive movement the other one that I think of when I think of Saint Patrick is prayer one of his biggest messages is don't turn away from prayer and you guys all know this you know that he doesn't always answer prayers the way you want you know that he doesn't answer the prayers that you want but the reality of all of it is he does answer and Patrick's life and everything in it each of his Visions is proof that there are answers there just have to know where to look for them the third one is belief and to me this is the big one that Saint Patrick presents to us because the belief that Saint Patrick had never wavered once he found it he never turned from it it never occurred to him to not pursue it it never occurred to him to stop crying he never doubted he had that kind of face that says this is so right this is so what is sustained me that I have to keep chasing it I have to know more I have to get closer and I know other people along with me because I'm positive that's what I'm supposed to be doing with my life and if I think about what I'm pursuing today or what I'm trying to accomplish or what I want my kids to know and believe then suddenly say Patrick is a guy I really want him to get to know cuz I want my kids to persevere when the world tells them they're stupid or when the world tells them that they shouldn't do the things they do like go to mass on Sunday and when the world tells them I need confession to find good enough I'm sure I'm sorry you're fine that's not what my kids need to hear right now and my kids need to hear is you can stick to this it's going to be okay and if you continue to prayer you will hear answers because I I honestly believe it maybe this is just me the prayer 98% of the time is about teaching us how to hear his voice it's not about what we're saying it's not about request our petitions our complaints are whatever's prayer is about tuning your ear so that when God answers you actually hear it I'm convinced that God has been speaking to all of us for decades and eons and nothing else in between and most of us have been completely just missing all of it and if I focus my ear it's like the old transistor radio right find that sweet spot where all recognize it which is why when we go to Mass you're the word of God right if you've been a Catholic for more than three years you've heard the entire Bible right cuz we go through it that's the whole point of the cycle here's a b and c and the whole idea is if you hear scripture enough if God thanks to you through those words you'll recognize it it's all about recognizing his voice and that's why I think Patrick's concept of prayer is so critical now that takes me to one of my favorite about Saint Patrick and that is his breastplate have you heard of Saint Patrick's breastplate okay and it is a beautiful for most people only know sections of it they don't realize that it is a really full-length prayer nor do they realize why it was written so remember those Chieftains that don't want him to go into Tara Patrick was actually approaching where they wanted to go and the opposing Chieftains forces were setting up an ambush some people refer to Saint Patrick's prayer in one of the translations it's actually called a spell of concealment it's also called a deer's cry and the story that goes with it says that Wednesday Patrick the breastplate as they were headed into the Ambush the people remaining hidden were waiting to Ambush him only saw a herd of wild deer with a fawn following coming toward them so they remained and Patrick passed on to Tara and that's where this prayer comes from but when I read this I think you guys are going to hear why I think it's so critical for today because I truly believe that this prayer has a lot to say to you and I and to our kids as well I'm also going to tell you a little bit about translation cuz I love words and how they're made and the original version of this I seen so many translations at this point I wasn't sure what you mean to you cuz there's a lot of good ones but there's one phrase I want you to get in your head because this is again a prayer which is also been done in a poem form OK Google what has a refrain in the first line of the first five stanzas as well as final stanza is the same thing I'm going to read a different translation but the translation I like for that refrain is I bind unto myself today you're tying something on yourself today and you think about going out to face scary things are going out to face anything that's going counter to your thinking yeah I want to bind something I want to try something on going to meet it's going to protect me K2 raisin the translation I'm going to read you is called I arrived today but I like to think of it as I bind unto myself today cuz I make sense okay so here we go I arrived today through a mighty the invocation of the Trinity through belief in the three minutes for confession of the Oneness of the creator of creation I arise today through the strength of Christ birth to his God do the strength of his crucifixion with his burial through the strength of his resurrection with his Ascension through the strength of his dissent for the Judgment of Doom I arise today through the strength the love of cherubim in The Obedience of Angels in the service of Archangels in the hope of Resurrection to meet with reward in the prayers of patriarchy in the predictions of prophets in the preaching of a muscles in the face of confessors in the innocence of holy virgins in the Deeds of righteous men I arise today through the strength of Heaven the light of the Sun the radiance of the the Splendor of fire the speed of lightning the swiftness of wind the depths of the sea the stability of the Earth the firmness of Rock I arrived play through God's strength to Pilot me God's might to uphold me God's wisdom to guide me God's eye to look before me God's ear to hear me God's word to say for me God's hands to guard me God shield to protect me God's host to save me from the snares of devils from temptation of Isis from everyone who shall wish me ill a far and near I summoned today all these powers between me and those evils against every cruel and merciless power that may oppose my body and soul against incantations of false prophets against Black Law's of pagan them against false laws of heredity of Heretics against craft of idolatry against spells of witches and Smithson Wizards against every now words that corrupts man's body and soul Christ to Shield me today against poison against burning against drowning against wounding so that there may come to me in abundance of reward Christ with me Christ before me Christ behind me Christ in me Christ beneath me Christ above me Christ on my right Christ on my left Christ when I lie down Christ when I sit down Christ when I arrive Christ in the heart of every man who thinks of me Christ in the mouths of everyone who speaks of me Christ in every eye that sees me Christ and every ear that hears me I arise today through a mighty strength the invocation of the Trinity through Leaf in the three Mist through confession of the Oneness of the creator of creation amen to me that level of faith that level of Desire if nothing else Christ in the mouths of everyone who speaks of me Christ in every eye that sees me and every ear that hears me it's not about me it's about me carrying him everybody else we receive especially in this year of the Eucharist we receive Holy Communion may I used to teach little kids that we become living Tabernacle struggle with that when I hit the car I'm chairing Christ Within Me if you think about that Tabernacle you think about the adjectives you would use to describe it bright shiny beautiful intriguing radiant is that what we are once we receive communion do we go out with the smiles on our faces like WeChat received the greatest thing ever because from everything I've read and study Patrick did Patrick walk with Christ within him constantly letting everybody know I come bearing the greatest gift I could ever give you and it doesn't matter if the Irish care about green and the kiss of the Irish she has to do with the Blarney Stone and not really anything else and in Green Bay ear and corned beef and cabbage were really just because they were cheaper than other foods and that's what the Irish could afford when they came to America and all these other traditions and habits they're great but they're celebrating the Irish people and there's nothing wrong with celebrating the Irish people that's a great thing to do as long as you remember that the reason we're celebrating the Irish people is because they are carrying Christ to everybody else okay that was a lot of questions that's perfect it's one of those prayers that I'm sure you guys have all four of the Christ with me Christ before me the whole thing but I'd honestly never read the entire breastplate and the more I looked at it and when you think of it as we think of it as asking for that level of protection and it takes you to I want to say it's Ecclesiastes somebody correct if I'm wrong but they talked about putting on the armor of Christ in you putting on the breastplate and the anklets and all the different things that Shields the things that carry truth I remember my son had a plastic set of armor when he was little that he would upon the armed guards in and put on all the armor before he went to do battle and and I just think that the beauty of saying out loud it's very similar to what we say to Saint Michael we know there's bad things in the world and we just we want protection again that because we are carrying a tremendous gift looking to see if there's anything else I was supposed to be telling you that I completely forgot about I didn't even talk about the Shamrock partially because I love analogies but every analogy is play flawed and you get into an argument over whether the Shamrocks a good analogy or not I figure it's good enough for what it does it does a great job of trying to at least get the beginning concept across but obviously it's not perfect I did not come across anything to that my understanding is the timing doesn't match as well as a location so it sounds like when he came back to Ireland he was much further in the North then he was when he was a slave and because of that there would not have been a chance for him to cross paths with him but I didn't see anything that suggested that he ever tried to also is likely given his age they may have been dead by then but I'm guessing on that part yes sir so there are quite a few how about this one Christopher is he a saint not anymore that Christopher has been removed from a lot of the things that we talked about because his story is actually mostly legend that they don't have anything to back it up in a Patrick at least as a real person and we have his cool stuff to vacuum up but you're right there is a difference between ones for whom they've been through the full canonization process versus Saints for whom we simply have a love because of the outcome not so much because we have definition of the process so for a current person to be canonized the same we verify the process where they were invoked to to do the Miracles but in the case of the folks before the canonization process none of that so it's more a sainthood because of the result of their actions as opposed to actually being able to prove all the actions belong to that person does that make sense that's why I try to pull away from the concept of doesn't matter as much weather he actually did all these different things it's because of what happened to the Irish people and the extremely Catholic nation that developed out of his early efforts to convert no he became a bishop he was Bishop our mama I'm probably mispronouncing that it's a r n a g h and that was in fact in Ireland so he did not arrive as a bishop he became one once he had enough followers and congregations to established but part of it down this is really going to cook your noodles a little bit anybody know what color his vestments likely were blue yes green is ordinary time but it not the national color of Ireland at the time it was much more likely that he was wearing blue and in fact in Ireland quite a few of the stained-glass windows and depict him in St Patrick's blue not the not the green but we also skate with him which is another again there's there's this melding of what happens over time between the especially in a place like Ireland with a nationality is so tied to the religion the only other place I can think of it like that has Poland you know you got these two places where they real deeply ingrained their face into their entire culture and it changes how everybody relates to each other and how they tell stories and how they talk about what happened a lot of a lot of the things that Patrick did actually were either codified or edited or or talked about later on as people found the earlier records but because there's so much translation going on with a lot of this some of the people have cast aspersions on but I come back I don't know that it really matters I don't know that it matters about how this came to be I think it really matters what the result was for the country what else thank you for your time I hope you had fun. About Saint Patrick thank you so much Becky had mentioned that we have Saint Patrick's confession his autobiography so we do have some copies in the back if you'd like to pick up a copy of the confession it's just in the back there next week we'll have Father Paul Mackey come he's from Milford Retreat Center he's going to talk about Saint Ignatius and the rules of discernment how do you make decisions how do you discern what it is that God you know telling you is making choices I'm looking forward to him coming next week and other than that thank you all for coming God bless you and have a safe journey home and we'll see you next week
